Wrote the lyrics after reading Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield, about the Spartans defense against the Persian invasion of ancient Greece. A big bow of gratitude to Fred Gillen Jr for his studio and production work, his drumming and his backing vocals. Many thanks to Norm Dodge for his stellar lead guitar work and Bob Goetz for his work on the bass.

Voice and backing guitar- Steve Scholle; lead guitar Norm Dodge; Bass Bob Goetz; backing vocals, drums and third guitar - Fred Gillen Jr. Produced live from the floor at Woody's House by Fred.

lyrics

These fallow fields these fallen fellows
The horses' screams the oxens' bellows
Our brethren then our brethren now
These fallow fields the oxman's plow

Savage clans and seaborne raiders
Migrating hordes and harsh invaders
These tides of war these tides of peace
The living the deceased

On this site the ancients battled
Now the scene of sheep and cattle
These fallow fields these fallen fellows
The screams of horse the oxens' bellows

We walk among fathers we walk among mothers
Long ago bleached for the sake of others
We hold you close we hold you near
Our hearts your hearts Oh the sorrow and the fear

For sisters and brothers here today
Still seeking to find another way
We hold you close we hold you near
The sorrow the sorrow and the fear

Let us be borne upon the shore
Another time kindness worn
Holding a faith a lover's kiss
The hope of children times such as this

The time of year the time of man
Who's holy trust who's searing plan
Baked in these fields soaked in this sand
Baked in these fields baked in the sand

As we come close behold us now
We hold the hands that work the plow
Sharing libations with those we trust
Sharing a part of us
Sharing a part of us

about

Stephen Scholle Hartsdale, New York

Picked up guitar in 1967. Began writing songs in 09 after a breakup. TY to Fred Gillen, Burr Johnson, Peter Calo and the Ashokan music community for supporting my passion. I write from the chord voicings and I write from the voice inside. Some songs channel moments. Sometimes words just sound good. I like to let the song speak and I like to work with others on that.
