Mr and Mrs Artichoke
Were pleasantly in attendance
Their children were lately in the news

Mr Beefsteak's hot potato
Was his first wife's pecadillo
We found him to be sullen and confused

The family asked for formal
They expected about as much
Though their guests were largely disabused

They couldn't find the coatrack
And the coatcheck girl was gone
Their coats just piled up there in the loos

The wait staff had it coming
They were tipsy by the evening
And Mr. Pester the employer was not amused

But he gave them each a tip
At the end of the affair
As he was quite similarly boozed

The final guests were lingering
Well past time for bedtime
They obviously had trouble reading cues

And the final unctuous handshake
From a former junior partner
Left Mrs Pester grimacing at the ooze

Next time let's not do this
She remarked
